The Kuril Islands are part of Russian territory, Peskov said.
Russia has the sovereign right to give names to Kuril Islands because they are part of its territory. This was stated by the official Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, February 14.
“Japan’s position is well known. We appreciate the new positive dynamics in our bilateral relations. We intend to maintain this momentum. But still, the Kuril Islands, of course, remains the territory of the Russian Federation”, – said Peskov.
The wound, the Japanese government sent a protest to Russia due to naming five of the Kuril Islands.
We will remind, in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to provide access to the former Japanese inhabitants of Southern Kuriles on these Islands. The Japanese themselves were dissatisfied with the results of the meeting between Abe and Putin.
