The company Pemex, which owns the plant, noted that firefighters still trying to extinguish the flames, from the sky rose a huge column of black smoke. The wounded received medical treatment, eight had been released.
The company said that the fire was caused by tropical storm Calvin, which passed across southern Mexico this week. The floods have caused the overflow ponds of the refinery, which has been pouring by-products of combustion which are flammable, the report said.
This plant is one of the largest in Mexico, process 330 thousand barrels of crude oil per day.
