In Manchester officially opened brought from Ukraine the monument to Friedrich Engels. The opening ceremony of the four-meter monument to the German philosopher was accompanied by a musical concert and a screening of a film about the journey of the monument from Ukraine to the UK.

On Sunday, July 16, in the British Manchester held the opening ceremony brought from Ukraine the monument of German philosopher, one of the founders of Marxism Friedrich Engels.

Opening of the monument took place during the 18-day Manchester international festival and was the final part of the cultural event. The opening ceremony of the monument was accompanied by a musical concert and a screening of a film about the journey of the monument from Ukraine to the UK.

In Soviet time the monument stood in the center of the village marianivka, the former collective farm in the Kharkiv region. After decommunization, it was decided to sell via the Internet. In the end it was bought by British artist and filmmaker Phil Collins. Collins carried the statue through half of Europe for the sake of their long-standing art-historical dream – noisy and in a big way to remind Manchester of his “adoptive son” of Engels.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Engels arrived in Manchester in 1842, where he wrote several of his famous works and eventually lived in the city for about 30 years.

In may 2015 in Ukraine entered into force the Law “About the condemnation of the Communist and Nazi regimes” prohibiting propaganda of Soviet symbols. The law implies, in particular, the renaming of cities and streets named after Soviet statesmen. The Institute of national remembrance published a list, which includes 520 historical figures whose activities are subject to the law of “decommunisation”, so their names should disappear from geographical names.
