There are more than 250 Russian-speaking schools.
The government of Latvia have forbidden to pass the exams in the 9th and 12th grade schools in any language other than the state.
Thus endorsed by the Ministry of education on the prohibition of examinations in the Russian language. The changes will take effect in the coming academic year, but for grades 9 organize a two-year transition period.
The new rules supersede the existing practice, which in Russian schools pupils could in the 9th grade to select the exam materials in Russian. In the 12th class exam materials available only in Latvian, but to answer the subject in Russian will not be.
According to the Ministry of education, from 2009 to 2016 the proportion of students who passed examinations in the Latvian language, increased from 60 to 85 percent.
Only in Latvia there are 168 primary and 108 secondary schools, where teaching takes place in Russian.
“The new measures will provide equal employment opportunities to graduates of normal schools and institutions for national minorities, as well as allow them to integrate successfully into the education in higher educational institutions where the teaching is in the state language. (lat.lang.)”, – according to the Ministry of education and science.
