Kazakh parliamentarians consider it “timely and relevant”.
Suggestions for reflection in the name of the capital of Kazakhstan named by President Nazarbayev are a timely, the Deputy of the Senate (upper chamber) of the Parliament Darkhan Kaletayev.
In November 2016 member of the lower house of Parliament Kuanysh Sultanov, presenting the Declaration on the basic achievements of the Republic during the years of independence, proposed to reflect in the name of capital name of the first President. A number of MPs did not rule out that the new name of the capital of Kazakhstan may sound like “President” or “Nazarbayev”. Nazarbayev thanked the parliamentarians for their initiative, but said that the name of the capital of the Republic has become a brand and he sees no need to rename Astana.
“Reflection of the name of a historical personality in the name of the cities and important objects has a wide practice in the United States and in Western Europe. In 2008 I made a suggestion about giving the Astana international airport named after the first President of Kazakhstan – Leader of nation Nursultan Nazarbayev. This initiative was widely discussed in the society and received, in my opinion, significant support. In this regard, the proposal of our colleagues in displaying the name of the first President in the name of the capital and close to the country is timely and relevant,” Mr. Kaletayev said during a joint meeting of chambers of Parliament.
He noted that “this proposal is reflected in the Declaration for the 25th anniversary of independence and gained popular support”.
