The rotation of the sculpture of Hetman 180 degrees will cost the city budget in 700 thousand UAH.
In Chernihiv a monument to Hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytsky, set in the eponymous square in the center of the city, began to expand in the opposite direction – back to Moscow.
As reported in the press service of the Chernihiv city Council, turning the sculpture of Hetman 180 degrees will cost the city budget in 700 thousand UAH.
A discussion on the need to deploy Khmelnitsky face-to-Pyatnitskaya Church, the regional drama theatre, and red square was quite long.
Now during the reconstruction of the square a monument by the famous sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze is facing to the Central square and Pyatnitskaya Church.
“As you know, this was the idea of the author of the monument – a famous Chernihiv architect Andrew of Carnality. But during the construction of the facility, the management has forced builders to expand the sculpture in the opposite direction, face to the then regional Committee of the Communist party”, – said the press service of the city Council.
*** The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky in Chernihiv, mounted in 50-ies of XX century, was to recall the 300-year anniversary of the “reunification” of Ukraine with Russia, which was celebrated in 1954. The initiator of the installation of the monument was the first Secretary of the Chernigov oblast Committee of the CP (b) Vasily Markov.
The monument is made in the form of a concrete statue (2.5 m high) on a cylindrical brick pedestal (height 3.2 m), rests on a quadrangular basement faced with stone and tiles. The basis is earthy hill. It is located in the center of the square named after B. Khmelnitsky (street of Hetman Polubotko). Authors – sculptors I. P. Kavaleridze, G. L. Petrashevich, architect – A. Karnabeda.
The references of Carnality, then first Secretary of the city Committee of the CP (b) U Fedor Korotkov ordered the Hetman looked in the direction of the projected building of the city party Committee.
On one of versions, on how best to install the monument, even asked a famous architect-restorer Pyotr Baranovsky, who was involved in the restoration of the Pyatnitskaya Church. Baranowski supposedly recommended to install the sculpture on the bearings to be able to deploy “if needed”.
