In the ceremony of opening the monument was attended by representatives of the authorities and the Embassy of the Russian Federation.
Bosnian Serbs erected a monument to the dead, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin.
The opening ceremony took place on Monday in the Eastern Sarajevo district in the Republic of Srpska, part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of local authorities and Russian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a few dozen citizens.
The monument is located at the entrance to the Museum of contemporary history of the Republic of Srpska. The monument is a black marble slab with a portrait of the diplomat and says “Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin (1952-2017). Thanks for the Russian “No”.
Thus the Bosnian Serbs expressed their gratitude for blocking a resolution in the UN Security Council on Srebrenica two years ago. In 2015 Churkin vetoed a paper developed by Britain, which condemned the mass killings in Srebrenica as genocide.
As you know, in July 1995 Bosnian Serb troops entered Srebrenica declared by the UN security Council “security zone”.
Almost without meeting resistance from the lightly armed Dutch troops from the “blue helmets” of the UN, the army of the Serbian General Ratko Mladic staged in the city the massacre of the Muslim population.
The result was abducted and killed about 8 thousand people, mostly men and boys.
Massacre in Srebrenica remains one of the most serious war crimes in Europe after the Second world war. The leaders of the Bosnian Serbs deny the fact of ethnic cleansing.
