Antarctic glaciers are melting rapidly
Since 2012, the rate of reduction of ice mass in Antarctica has tripled. This is stated in the message of the UN environment on Twitter.
“For 25 years, from 1992 to 2017, Antarctica lost 3 trillion tons of ice. The rate of reduction of ice mass in Antarctica has tripled since 2012. If 2012 is annually melted 76 billion tons of ice of Antarctica, in recent years, this figure increased to 219 billion tons”, – stated in the message.
Recall that the Earth could face global warming of 4-5 degrees Celsius compared to preindustrial period.
The scientists estimate average global temperatures by almost one degree higher than the rate pre-industrial times and is increasing every ten years by about 0.17 degrees.
