The pyramid of the moon is one of the largest buildings of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.
Archaeologists of the National Institute of anthropology and history (Mexico) found under the Pyramid of the moon in the ancient city of Teotihuacan underground tunnel that goes probably into the chamber, where they buried the dead.
Scientists believe that the tunnel symbolizes the underworld.
The pyramid of the moon is one of the largest buildings of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. It is located in the city of Teotihuacan, which existed from the III century BC to VII century ad. The researchers argue that there lived representatives of different indigenous peoples of the Americas, in particular Nahua, Otomi, and totonac.
The pyramid of the moon built in 200-450 years BC, it was used for ritual ceremonies dedicated to the goddess of water and moon, Chalchiutlicue.
Thanks to the excavations in the 80-ies of the last century, researchers have found human remains with deformed skulls, and artifacts that were made of green stone (beads and anthropomorphic figures). In the new study, experts were scanning the pyramid with the help of special devices.
Through this study, the researchers found a tunnel at a depth of eight meters, which leads to a chamber length of 15 meters. The entrance to the tunnel is located in the southern part of the Plaza of the Moon, attached to the temple, but perhaps there’s another entrance on the East side of the room.
While researchers do not know what is in the burial chamber. However, experts believe that the underground system of the premises carries the symbol of the underworld.
