French photographer Antoine BRU (Antoine Bruy) took a picture of the town of Coober Pedy in South Australia and its inhabitants. To hide from extreme heat, they live mainly underground.
Coober Pedy is a sun-drenched town, better known as “the world capital of opals”. In the summer, during the day, temperatures can exceed +40 °C, and the night falls to +20 °C, which, together with the arid climate makes the city very uncomfortable for life. The name itself translates from the language of Australian aborigines as “white man’s hole”. Deposits of precious stones were first discovered here in 1915, and its production remains the main source of income for local residents. BRU admits that he was shocked by the “surreal landscapes” of the city.
Many miners worked here in the 1970-1990s, but today, Coober Pedy has less than 100 workers. They work mainly in the winter when the temperature is not so extreme.
