The Indians – the native inhabitants of the American continent.
In the United States is now home to about five million Indians, or approximately 1.6 percent of the population. How they live now and how to treat them other inhabitants of America.
Once the number of Indian tribes exceeded 2200, but now they barely 550. A significant part of their lives in numerous reserves in the U.S., mainly in the West of the country. A significant proportion of the reserves are located in the North and in the centre, and quite a bit of their “huddles” in the Eastern regions of the United States.
Not all of the existing tribes are officially recognized. So, the Office for relations with the Indians between 1978 and 2004, has considered more than 150 petitions, but the official recognition was received only by some tribes.
Not all are able to pay taxes because the unemployment rate among Indians is incredibly high — up to 90%.
Given that many homes do not even have electricity, not to mention the appliances facilitating everyday life. Last but not least, this is a consequence of the low level of education that residents are not getting.
The cost of food is twice the price outside the reserves, which is not surprising, considering the barren land on which they are located.
All this leads to another problem — addiction to alcohol. This weakness has become almost a national characteristic and simultaneously another reason for the high mortality among Indians, along with diabetes and obesity.
Almost main source of income are gambling houses. Restrictions on the opening of the casino, which operate in many States, do not apply on reserves.
In addition to casino income, some tribes receive from the sale of their own products and wool. But revenue is small, so most living on reservations, still live below the poverty line.
The fair and presentation to the public – that’s the way of existence of this nation. Recently, they entertain visitors, to earn his food.
Many of the Indians, as in the past century, indifferent to the ecology and environment. They put a lot of effort to preserve nature. For example, the tribe of Onondaga for many years is suing the us government for the right to possess land in the state of new York, with an area of more than a million hectares. However, they do not insist on eviction living in this area and do not require the rights of the casino project. The only thing they want is to protect the environment. The main requirement for the authorities to begin work on the cleanup of Onondaga lake and surrounding areas.
