Legendary American boxer Bernard Hopkins symbolically concluded his 34-year professional career.
Hopkins from his farewell fight decided not to make a show, and chose a very serious opponent, 51-year-old veteran met with international world champion under version WBC Joe Smith Jr.
Before the final chord Hopkins have not been out of the ring for almost two years – from the first round, it became clear that multiple record holder and a future member of the Boxing Hall of fame is far from his ideal form.
Smith Jr. controlled the fight and in the eighth round staged a symbolic farewell for Hopkins. Joe was able to invest in a combination in which the opponent flew from the ring and fell from the wall height. Hopkins did not have time to return to the ring after a career debut with an early defeat.
“I’m still in shock, wanted to fight Smith. He pushed me out of the ring. I hit my head and sprained her ankle during the fall. After that, I couldn’t stand up. I am sure that this would not have happened if not for the fall,” he said after the fight multiple world champion.
Bernard Hopkins entered the Boxing history as the first athlete to become a world champion in four versions. “Alien” repeatedly beat his age record and twice finished the year status as the best boxer of the world regardless of weight category.
