They give scientists a lot of questions.
Any story written by people, and even the ancient and many times to rewrite. Each author embellishes and complements the text, the facts are overgrown with myths and legends, so in the end it is impossible to say with certainty, what was and what was not really. Or even anyone.
We have prepared for you a list of famous historical figures, the existence of which is questioned by modern science.
1. King Arthur
Every child knows the story of the knights of the Round table and the sword in the stone. But historians believe that the brave king Arthur — no more than a legend, who embodies the collective image of the courage of that era. In the official Chronicles it is not mentioned.
Scientists suggest that the prototype of king Arthur could be the Roman General Lucius Artery Castes. The second candidate is the ruler of the Britons Ambrose Aurelian.
2. Homer
The ancient Greek poet, author of “the Odyssey” and “Iliad”, on the theories of experts, too, could never exist. No credible evidence of his life and a detailed analysis of the texts indicates that parts of works written in a different style.
So many historians believe that Homer was the alias under which the whole group worked philosophers of the time.
3. Pythagoras
The Pythagorean theorem known to every schoolboy. Only now scientists doubt that it really proved Pythagoras. There are no reliable evidence of this has survived, the authorship is based only on the words of the Pythagoreans. But aren’t they also claimed that Pythagoras was the son Apollo and that he had a Golden thigh?
4. Joan of Arc
The maid of Orleans, heroine of France and one of the leaders in the hundred years war, known to everyone. Hard to find another historical figure, which is devoted to such a vast amount of research and scientific texts. But, despite plenty of evidence and proof, the personality of Joan of Arc remains a mystery.
Blame mythologizing the image of warriors, which began during her life. Jeanne shrouded in so many legends that through them it is impossible to consider a real person. Many historians support the theory that the maid of Orleans — a collective image, a kind of “mockingjay”, inspiring the people of France.
5. King Solomon
The existence of king Solomon, to whom we owe the parable of the chopping of the baby and about the ring with the words “And this too shall pass”, only proves the biblical texts. But archaeologists who are working on their test, I can’t find credible evidence of the existence of a Jewish king.
Probably, the character of Solomon was taken by another king Suleiman.
6. King Midas
The story of greedy king Midas, whose touch turned any object into gold, known to everyone. Despite the references in the Chronicles and the burial was found, scientists still doubt the existence of king Midas.
The most common theory is that king Midas really lived and ruled Phrygia, but had nothing to do with greedy tyrant of the myths.
7. Robin Hood
Many historians have tried to identify the person of the noble bandit of Sherwood forest. The task is complicated by the fact that the first mention of Robin hood date back to the XIII–XIV centuries, and in that time piracy has flourished so much so that to identify one robber, though noble, is very difficult.
And more and more scientists are inclined to believe that Robin hood is just a legend, the inspirer of the poor and oppressed.
8. Uncle Sam
The famous old Uncle Sam, pointing at a potential American recruits, has long been perceived as a really existing personality. In fact it is just a collective image of the United States, inspired, presumably, the butcher Sam Wilson.
9. Jack Dawson
Handsome Jack Dawson played by Leonardo Di Caprio not only conquered the hearts of millions, but also helped to identify the deceased on Board the “Titanic” of Joseph Dawson that worked on the ship in the fuel compartment. Before the film’s release at his burial was listed as George. Dawson, as the card found on the deceased.
10. Shakespeare
The Shakespearean question for many years agitating the minds of historians and art historians. There are plenty of theories about who was hiding under the pseudonym of William Shakespeare: referred to as individual candidates or groups of authors.
The most popular candidates for the role of Shakespeare are Christopher Marlowe, Francis bacon, Roger Menners and Edward de Vere.
