According to scientists from Trinity College Dublin, hearing loss can be a symptom of developing dementia.
However, neurodegenerative changes can be prevented, improving verbal communication, and supporting brain health, experts say.
The study showed a small Association between age-related hearing loss and increased risk of cognitive decline. These include, first of all, Executive function and episodic memory. Hearing loss has also been associated with lower speed of information processing, experts say.
An estimated two-thirds of patients aged over 65 years suffer from hearing loss, and previous studies have shown that age-related hearing loss precedes the beginning of dementia for 5-10 years. Experts suggest that the lack of mental stimulation experienced by people who can not hear, can play a role in cognitive decline. To come to such conclusions, the researchers conducted a systematic review of 36 works involving 20264.
According to experts, hearing loss leads to a decrease in the volume of gray and white matter of the brain. One of the hypotheses explaining the link between hearing loss and dementia, is that hearing loss could lower cognitive abilities using the violation of speech perception.
