Half of the Land proposed to turn to the reserve

Половину Земли предложили превратить в заповедникProtection of half of the Earth’s surface will help to maintain a comfortable ecosystem.

To preserve the ecosystem of the Earth, half the planet’s surface needed by 2050 to make a protected zone. This is necessary not only in order to save wild animals from extinction but also to preserve the comfortable ecosystem. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of an article published in the journal Science.

Today 3.6% of the world ocean and 14.7% of the land are the status of protected natural areas. In 2014, some UN member States have signed the Nagoya Protocol that custody should get 10% of the ocean and 17% of the land. According to the latest results of scientists from the U.S. and China, these numbers should be much higher. By 2030, the conservation area should be one third of the planet (including the waters), and by 2050 – half.

According to the authors, this measure is necessary to preserve biodiversity on Earth. Otherwise, by 2050, our planet will face mass extinction of various wildlife species. Their calculations, scientists have been considering that on Earth there are still many species that are simply not known to science. According to various estimates by other research groups, the conservation area needs to make 25% to 75% of the Earth’s surface. The authors suggest at the next Congress on biodiversity, which will take place in 2020, set a specific goal for the next 10 years is to make 30% of the planet’s natural security area.

Scientists emphasize that it is important to determine areas that need protection first and foremost. According to them, first and foremost, this is a region with a poor species composition of living organisms. Protection of half of the Earth’s surface will help, according to the authors, to maintain a comfortable ecosystem for humans. Moreover, if scientists proposed goal will not be met by 2050, humanity could face a serious food and environmental crisis.
