UN peacekeepers should be deployed around the occupied Donbass.
The UN peacekeeping mission must be deployed throughout the occupied regions of Donbas, where there is a war, and in the uncontrolled part of the Russian-Ukrainian border.
This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman in his address on the occasion of the International day of UN peacekeepers.
The head of government noted that the issue of peacekeepers of the United Nations is currently very topical for Ukraine.
“Military, informational, cybernetic and economic aggression of the ruling regime of the Russian Federation, prolonged fighting in the East of the country forced the government to declare the need for peacekeeping missions in separate regions of Donetsk and Lugansk regions”, – he said.
The Prime Minister added that Ukraine will ask the international community to work actively towards the introduction of peacekeepers in the occupied Donbass, because “every day of delay costs us lives of our defenders”.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the introduction of peacekeepers in Donbass requires the approval of the aggressor state in the UN Security Council, with whom we have a different vision of the mission. However, Ukraine is determined to continue to defend its position. To achieve its goals, the UN peacekeeping mission should have broad powers and be placed in the whole area of conflict, in particular, the uncontrolled part of the Russian-Ukrainian border – said Groisman.
The Prime Minister is confident that with international support, and courage of the Ukrainian soldiers, “we are able to return peace to Ukraine and to restore the territorial integrity of the country.”
Groysman reminded that this year marks 70 years since the founding of the UN peacekeeping mission. During this time, peacekeepers have performed more than 70 operations of various degree of complexity in world hotspots and became a symbol of the aspirations of mankind for universal brotherhood and peace and a symbol of hope for the people on whose land the war came.
Note that may 29 is international peacekeepers day, proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2002.
