Ukraine has received from the Chief prosecution of Georgia’s request about the search, detention and extradition of Mikhail Saakashvili.
This was announced by the Deputy Minister of justice of Ukraine Sergey Petukhov at a briefing on Tuesday.
According to the Chief Prosecutor’s office of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili acts as the accused in four criminal proceedings initiated in the following articles of the Criminal code of Georgia:
article 182 – the appropriation, embezzlement or misappropriation of another’s property
article 333 and article 117 – abuse of power, committed through violence or use of weapons
article 332 – abuse of official
“The decision of the judge of Board on criminal cases of the Tbilisi city court on August 2, 2014 in respect of Mikheil Saakashvili was elected a measure of restraint in form of detention. The decision of the senior Prosecutor of the prosecutors office of Georgia of 4 August 2014 in connection with the refusal to appear in the investigative body and the failure to identify the whereabouts of Mikhail Saakashvili, he was declared wanted,” – said Petukhov.
He said that at the request of the Main Prosecutor’s office of Georgia provides guarantee that it has no political overtones, and that Saakashvili will not be held accountable for crimes not covered by the request and that it will not extradite to a third state without the consent of Ukraine.
The Ministry of justice decided to refer the request to the Prosecutor General to conduct extradition check.
