Sapele is located on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Scientists from Germany found on the slopes of mount Kilimanjaro the tallest tree in Africa.
They turned out to be Sapele high, which reaches a height of 81.5 meters. The research results were published in the journal Biodiversity and Conservation.
The researchers studied the vegetation of elephants on Kilimanjaro for over 20 years. During this time they studied about 600 plots of forest vegetation. At a height of 1400 to 2100 meters on Kilimanjaro grows Sapele high, caught the highest of African trees found so far. Until now, scientists believed that the maximum height of entandrophragma does not exceed 55 meters. Between 2012 and 2016 years scientists using laser instruments to measure height 20 entandrophragma and found them among the eight trees over 60 metres. The growth of annual rings, the researchers determined their approximate age — from 150 to 600 years old, the age record holder is estimated at 470.
The tallest tree the Earth at the moment is an evergreen Sequoia Hyperion, growing up in California. Its height amounts to 115.2 meters.
