The DNA of modern Egyptians coincides more with the genome of the inhabitants of Africa South of the Sahara than with the mummies buried in their country
This is evidenced by the results of the study of the genome of the mummies.
These data help researchers to assess the influence of history on the genetics of the Egyptians.
An international team of researchers analyzed DNA from 151 mummies from the archaeological area of Abusir El-Melek. The site is located along the Nile in middle Egypt. The age of the mummies has about 1400 BC — 400 BC
According to senior study author Johannes Krause, Director of the Institute of human Sciences, max Planck Society (Germany), genetic studies of ancient Egyptian mummies – a rare phenomenon because of several problems: hot climate, high humidity level in most of the tombs and of the chemicals used during mummification, which destroy DNA.
The success of this team of scientists in the extraction and analysis of DNA from the mummies is a breakthrough that opens the door for further study of the mummified remains to better understand the history of human settlement in Egypt.
The goal of researchers was to find out whether the injured ancient Egyptian people at the genetic level due to invasion and foreign domination.
