Australian and German physicists called the main candidate in the Universe who may have chemical elements “island of stability”, located at the end of the periodic table and containing 114 protons and more. A study published on the website arXiv.org.
It’s about Przybylski’s star (HD 101065). In its atmosphere a lot of heavy elements that the authors believe are the decay products of the elements of the “island of stability”. Scientists propose to conduct a search in the spectra of HD 101065 traces of nobelium, Lawrence, nixonia and plerome.
In accordance with the shell model, there are nuclei with completely filled energy shells. These elements form an “island of stability” in contrast to the unstable nuclei of neighboring elements. According to the shell theory, there should be an isotope of Fl-298 c magic neutron number N=184 with a half-life of up to 10 minutes.
Star HD 101065 opened in 1961, the Polish-Australian astronomer Antonin Przybylski. It is located at a distance of 370 light years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. Most likely, the HD 101065 lighter than the Sun and is subgiants. A distinctive feature of the Przybylski star — a very small content in the atmosphere of iron and Nickel, at the same time, a star rich in heavy elements such as strontium, cesium, thorium, ytterbium, and uranium.
