Former leader of Transnistria fled to Moldova

Under cover of night Shevchuk crossed to the “boats” over the river.

The ex-President of Transnistria Yevgeny Shevchuk, who led the breakaway Republic from 2011 to 2016, in the night of Wednesday secretly left Transnistria, declared to the deputies of the Supreme Council (Parliament) speaker Alexander Scherba.

The Supreme Council for the environment deprived of immunity Shevchuk on representation of the Prosecutor of the PMR Anatoly Gorecki, who asked the Parliament to give consent to the involvement of ex-President investigations. According to the Prosecutor, in respect of the codes of criminal case on the embezzlement of public funds in especially large sizes.

“According to available information, after receiving the message (on the upcoming session of Parliament. — Approx. ed.) from the Chairman of the Supreme Council Yevgeny Shevchuk in the night, crossed the Dniester river on the boat and departed from the territory of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic,” said Scherba.

Shcherba also reported that the Investigative Committee of the PMR is now investigating five criminal cases, the main accused which is ex-President of Transnistria.

Transnistria, 60% of inhabitants are Russians and Ukrainians sought to secede from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that Moldova will join Romania. In 1992, after a failed attempt by the Moldovan authorities the power to solve the problem, Transnistria has become virtually beyond the control of Chisinau’s territory.
