The British critic took the dangerous step to satisfy my own curiosity.
A protective layer of varnish is applied to paintings to preserve them from the action of time, but this process has the reverse result — paintings discolored, reports the Chronicle.Info with reference to 120.Su.
Portrait of an unknown lady, written in 1618, almost 200 years ago was covered with a layer of yellowish varnish, so until recently it was impossible to enjoy the true colors of this picture.
Art historian Philip mould from Britain decided to correct this situation and clean the portrait of a stranger. He created a special mixture of gel and solvent, and then held a long test, because you had to delete pictures with just the Polish without damaging the paint.
Now the painting, which is part of a private collection, looks completely different, and you can admire its magnificent colors.
