Last week at the annual Congress of representatives from FIFA came to the conclusion that the holding of the Confederations Cup it is no longer viable. It is reported by the Brazilian newspaper “Globo Esporte”. It is expected that soon the information about the closing of the Confederations Cup, will receive an official confirmation.
To fill the gap after the closure of the FIFA Confederations Cup plans due to the new tournament, restarting the club world Cup or world championship in the U-20 category.
The Confederations Cup has become a serious problem for FIFA before the world Cup 2022 in Qatar. Due to the difficult climatic conditions in the calendar there is no place for it. In 2026 the situation is different – the world Cup, most likely, will jointly host the United States, Canada and Mexico, and therefore unwise to hold a test tournament a year before the world Cup.
On the demise of the Confederations Cup was influenced by the weak interest in the tournament, teams are taking the tournament back-up compounds, and the fans are reluctant to buy up tickets.
The Confederations Cup was first held in 1992. Brazil has won the tournament a record four times.
