Facebook will teach you to type text with power of thought

Facebook introduced the project of the research group Building 8, which is developing the interface that allows you to type text with power of thought.

The announcement was made by Regina Dugan (Regina Dugan), former Director of the office of advanced research projects of the Ministry of defense (DARPA) and the former head of the experimental group Google, ATAP, at the conference, F8.

Dugan, who heads the Building 8, said that the team goal is to create something simple, giving the ability with the brain to give the command to “Yes” and “No”. According to her, it can radically change how people interact c technologies.
She spoke about “brain mouse for augmented reality”. Technology can be a perfect method of getting direct signal of neural activity that eliminates the need to use augmented reality to track the movements of the hands and other body parts. The device also may be useful for patients with severe paralysis, acting as a “voice prosthesis”.

Dugan noted that the company is not going to invade people’s thoughts. It is more about “decoding the words that you have already decided to speak, by sending them to the speech center of your brain.” Facebook compares this with a situation where the man has a lot of pictures and he decides to share just some of them.

Facebook has no plans to create any invasive implant. “We think it is best to start with optical imaging,” said Dugan. The use of neural imaging may be the only non-invasive approach that will allow us to share information about neural activity at the inputs of electronic devices, she says. It could be something like a cap that a person wears on the head. But the technology does not yet exist, and its development will take years.

On a prototype in the form of implantable devices for medical purposes, now has a team of more than 60 scientists and engineers at the University of California San Francisco, University of California, Berkeley and several other institutions. This prototype will be created in the next two years. Long-term goal is to develop a commercial non-invasive neural device that will use the imaging technology of the brain.
