According to researchers, survivors of stroke are most often diagnosed cancer of the colon, lung and prostate.
Obtained by specialists of the Royal hospital Princesa in Madrid (Spain) data indicate that nearly 45% of cases the diagnosis of cancer occurs within the first six months after diagnosis “a stroke”.
“In post-mortem studies, it was assumed that cancer may develop after a stroke, but the magnitude of this relationship previously has not been established,” said the study’s author, Dr. Jacobo Rosado.

Researchers analyzed the medical records of all 914 of patients admitted from the emergency Department to the division of stroke at the hospital of La Princesa in the period from January 2012 to December 2014. During the 18-month observations in 29 cases (7.6 percent) who have had a stroke, was diagnosed with cancer. Most often it affects the colon, lungs and prostate gland.
It was above the expected incidence rate of 4.5% based on average data in General. The average time between the beginning of the stroke and the cancer diagnosis was about six months.
While two thirds (62%) cancer patients had documented metastases.
