Cholesterol is a type of fat contained in human blood. High cholesterol is a risk factor for development of vascular disease (coronary heart disease, CHD), a major cause of death and disability in developed countries.

The process that causes narrowing of blood vessels due to the formation of fatty (lipid) deposits and subsequent growth of connective tissue and deposition of calcium in the vessel walls, called atherosclerosis. In the early stage of the process on the walls of the arteries are laid strips of fat-containing cholesterol. It starts to happen when a man passes approximately 20 years.

This process is not normal, but the strips of fat are not dangerous to health and may disappear. However, they can be delayed further, and thus cause irreversible changes in the structure of the walls of arteries, leading to growth of connective tissue, like a scar, around the clot of cholesterol. Such changes do not occur at all, but with age it’s becoming more common problem.

This process affects relatively small areas inside the artery, and very often there is protrusion of the inner surface of the vessel when formed the so-called plaques. Cholesterol plaques don’t disappear as easily as strips of fat.

The result is the appearance of plaques may occur narrowing of the arteries, and as a consequence some parts of the body are insufficiently supplied with oxygen.

In addition, there may be other complications, such as thrombus formation in the artery. The artery can be completely blocked, and if this area is not supplied with blood in other vessels, there can be tissue necrosis (infarction), leading to myocardial infarction, stroke or gangrene.
