This is the largest expedition in the history of the country.
The Estonian Maritime Museum will hold the popular scientific expedition to Antarctica.
The expedition will be dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the opening of the continent sailor, a native Estonian island of Saaremaa by Faddey Bellingshausen (the birth of Fabian Gottlieb Thaddeus von Bellingshausen – ed.).
“Will be the largest in Maritime history modern Estonian popular-scientific expedition that will shed light on the historic flight was born on the island of Saaremaa Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica”, – stated in the message.
Ordered for the expedition sailboat will arrive this summer in Tallinn, where it will be prepared for a long journey.
It is not known when exactly will the expedition start and how long it lasts. But Bellingshausen came into the campaign from Kronstadt on 4 July 1819, and returned on 5 August 1821.
In honor of the famous traveler in Estonia prepared also set on the island of Saaremaa, the monument to the Navigator. It will create the sculptor Gunnar Vares.
A graduate of the Kronstadt naval cadet corps, party of the first circumnavigation in the sloop Hope, commanded also a native of the Baltic nobles, Ivan Kruzenshtern, Faddey Bellingshausen 1819-1821 in years led round-the-world expedition to the Antarctic in the South polar sea. It consisted of the sloops Vostok and Mirny.
During the expedition in two small sailing vessels not fitted for navigation in ice, were discovered mainland Antarctica and 29 Islands. During the campaign was collected unique scientific and ethnographic collections.
