Palm cockatoos not just singing like other birds.
These parrots are able to break off a stick and holding it in its hands to beat out a rhythm. It’s the only living beings besides humans that use musical instruments.
According to a study published this week, 18 of the palm cockatoo is beaten with a stick on wood not by coincidence, that is, birds beat is the rhythm. Among animals, “drumming”, as such, is fairly common, enough to recall the woodpeckers which are hammering the tree with its beak. Several species of birds use the legs to clear the fraction. But palm cockatoos use a special tool, not part of the body. As is often the case, the musical sophisticated of these parrots can be heard during the mating period.
According to researchers from the Australian national University, palm cockatoos beat a stick on the edge of the hollow to achieve a resonant sound. At the same time, they will complement the rhythmic battle to his whistling, twitching to the beat of fluff on the head with a comb. Robert Heinsohn, one of the study’s authors, argues that this ability is most likely transmitted from birds on from generation to generation.
