Paleontologists have discovered that the increase in the number of toxic algae could lead to the death of the dinosaurs.
American researchers have found evidence for his hypothesis during excavations in Madagascar, the article says of the journal Science.
Scientists from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington found in the North-Western part of Madagascar, a number of mass graves. According to the analysis of fossil remains of animals killed about 70 million years ago – 5 million years before the start of the extinction of the dinosaurs in other parts of the world.
Because many fossils have been found near ancient rivers, scientists have suggested that the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs Madagascar became ancient algae. If algae was too much, it could lead to poisoning as water animals, and those who came to drink. This opinion was expressed by the study’s lead author, geologist Raymond Rogers.
In favor of this hypothesis say, in particular, poses in which he was found dead the dinosaurs – apparently, the animals before death was convulsing. In addition, scientists have discovered deposits of carbonates, which indicate active growth of algae. However, remnants of the algae themselves killers to detect still failed.
According to paleontologist K. Behrensmeyer from the Smithsonian, “this is a very provocative hypothesis, which draws attention to the fact that we probably did not consider seriously enough”.
