Data from the apparatus Cassini showed that the inclination of the magnetic field of Saturn were unexpectedly small.
Because of this anomaly, scientists are unable to measure the duration of a day on the planet, according to the official website of NASA.
As shown by the new measurements, the magnetic axis of Saturn is almost completely coincides with its axis of rotation. Apparently, the magnetic axis deviates from the axis of rotation is less than 0.06 degrees. While scientists are unable to explain how Saturn appeared a similar magnetic field.
“The inclination of the magnetic field of Saturn was much smaller than we previously thought. This fact is extremely hard to explain. For this reason, we could not measure length of day on Saturn, but we continue to work on this and looking for other methods of measurement,” says Michelle Dougherty, one of the researchers of the mission.
Such difficulties in measurement are related to the fact that Saturn no visible dark spots, such as the Great red spot on Jupiter. Therefore, to calculate the speed of rotation of Saturn on its axis have on the other parameters.
The team will continue to collect and analyze data for the remaining part of the Cassini mission, including during his last rendezvous with Saturn, which is expected in September. But, apparently, the data on the planet’s magnetic field will receive other probes.
