The movement for nuclear disarmament (ICAN) on Sunday, December 10, awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2017. The ceremony took place in Oslo in the town hall of the Norwegian capital.
The remuneration amounts to 9 million SEK (about 900 thousand euros). The award was received by Director of ICAN Beatrice Finn of Sweden, together with the survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.
“The most important message of ICAN that the world will never be safe as long as nuclear weapons exist,” said a member of the Nobel Committee Berit Reiss-Andersen. According to her, the ban on the use of weapons, there are many influential opponents, but now the rejection is more important than ever.
As stated in the statement of the Nobel Committee, the organization was awarded “for his work to draw attention to the catastrophic consequences of any use of nuclear weapons,” and for its “revolutionary efforts towards the legal prohibition of such weapons”.
