Now scientists have found the explanation for this prolonged eruption of the volcano located on the Indonesian island of Java. A new study showed that mud volcano is connected to magmatic chambers related to the nearby volcanic system, and from there he draws dirt, water and stones.
Previous studies have shown that eruptions are Lucy gases associated with the magma, but still no one was able to prove the connection of Lucy with the volcanic complex of Arjuno-Welirang. With the help of seismometers, an international team of researchers has created a 3D map of the earth under the volcano and found the tunnel system, connecting Lucy and Arjuno. It is for these tunnels of magma and other fluids enter the hydrothermal system, Lucy, supporting the eruption.
And what eruption. At the peak of its activity in September 2006, the volcano was daily thrown up to 180 000 cubic metres of dirt. Most of it currently is hardened, but the eruption has covered over 6 square kilometers, and almost 60,000 Indonesians forced to leave their homes. And, according to experts, the eruption will continue for at least another few years.
