During the last 2 years, the incredibly fast rise of PUBG and Fortnite made Battle Royale genre a rapidly growing trend. Revenues of developers in this realm are growing bigger than the income of many AAA projects.
In 2019, a couple of major players, Fortnite and PUBG, were added with the third heavyweight title, Apex Legends by Respawn Entertainment, and a significant cross-platform market player, Creative Destruction by Titan Studios. This title is one of the leaders on the Asian mobile market and takes significant share on several platforms. As Sensor Tower estimates, Creative destruction will close their first year with over 5 million players in June 2019.
Reddit community of the title reports about stable performance even on old devices like iPhone 5, meaning the game is more accessible for mobile gamers than its competitors. It’s not as overcrowded as well, providing new players with a convenient skill development curve. The gameplay of this rising Battle Royale is based on Fortnite guidelines in a more futuristic setting.
Respawn Entertainment launched their Apex Legends later this year without any announcements or advertisement campaigns, which is the first precedent in the history of the industry. According to PCGamer, Apex Legends gathered over 50 million players during its first month. This game presents unique gameplay mechanics that overlay the traditional last-man-standing gameplay formula.
Other big gaming corporations also joined the genre. EA Dice presented its Battlefield V Firestorm with outstanding Frostbite-driven graphics. Though the game is not free like its competitors, the official sales figures over the first 3 months surpassed 7,5 million copies.
EA does not submit the current data, but estimations of the Reddit society fluctuate from 12 to 14 million copies. Firestorm’s direct competitor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout, is based on the same sales model and offers post-apocalyptic warfare instead of World War II setting.
Despite significant technological advantages, AAA Battle Royale projects can’t compete with cross-platform titles that are available on PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. PUBG and Fortnite are still unconditional leaders. The Verge reports that PUBG has nearly the same player count with Fortnite which closed their financial year with over 250 million active IPs.
This year several more Battle Royale titles are coming. Such promising projects as Darvin Project, Fear the Wolves, Cuisine Royale, and Realm Royale are already available for free in Steam Early Access. The most recent unusual release for fans of medieval setting, Mordhau was released on April 23.
