Bacteria on the ISS proved to be resistant to antibiotics

Бактерии на МКС оказались устойчивыми к антибиотикамEscherichia coli was grown in parallel on the ISS and on Earth.

Grown on the International space station, Escherichia coli was the most resistant to antibiotics in contrast to the “earthly” counterparts.

Researchers from Denmark, Germany, USA and Brazil have determined that the bacteria in low gravity conditions start to protect you from the effects of antibiotics.

They create a kind of biofilm. The size of the individual cells is reduced. To such conclusion scientists came after the experiments conducted on the ISS.

Escherichia coli was grown in parallel on the ISS and on Earth. They acted in the same antibiotic concentrations. The “space” of bacteria did not act the “earth” portion.

The size of E. coli cells with the ISS on average 73% less than usual. Their numbers in the cosmos was more than 13 times than that of Earth. Scientists came to the conclusion that the study of organisms in conditions of reduced gravity allows to identify features of their biochemistry.

On Earth, they are masked by gravity.
