Astronomers have discovered a supermassive “voracious” black holes

These black holes were intensively feeding on surrounding gas and matter.

A group of scientists-astronomers from Italy and some other countries, is now studying the processes that result from the depths of galaxies of different types “expelled” streams of interstellar gas.

And not so long ago with the help of the MUSE instrument (Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) that is installed on the telescope Very Large Telescope (VLT) Observatory of Paranal in Chile, they were able to learn something interesting about the so-called galaxies, jellyfish. Such galaxy got its name from the long “tentacles” of matter, tens of thousands of light-years outside the galactic disk, reports dailytechinfo.org.

“Tentacles” galaxies jellyfish that are usually found in rather dense galactic clusters, formed as a result of the process similar to the creation of pressure using a piston. Gravity pulls galaxy clusters and the latter, moving at great speed, coming in clusters and the gas in the cluster acts as a piston, creating pressure that “blows out” from its galactic disk long tails of matter. Thus, intensive mixing of the gas space in the course of such processes is the reason for the explosive surge of the processes of formation of new stars.

But the most interesting is that in the center of six of the seven investigated galaxies jellyfish astronomers had detected supermassive black holes that were intensively feeding on surrounding gas and matter. Is the ratio of the number of active black holes to the number of galaxies is unusually high, in the case of normal galaxies, active supermassive black hole contains at most every tenth galaxy.

“The relationship between active supermassive black holes and the processes within galaxies-the jellyfish had not been considered previously in any of the existing theories,” says Bianca Poggianti (Bianca Poggianti), a leading scientist the astronomer – “We believe that the intense power of the black hole provides a portion of the gas, which is under the influence of high pressure not rushed out of the galactic disk and towards the center.”

Made by the Italian astronomers opening contains a partial answer to a longstanding question: Why only a small portion of supermassive black holes residing in the centers of huge galaxy, is active? Because supermassive black holes are present in almost every existing galaxy, and only very few of them actively absorb matter and bright light surrounding the space.

In conclusion, it should be noted that this discovery was made by astronomers in the framework of an extensive program to study galaxies-jellyfish, which is underway right now. In the framework of this programme will be examined a sufficiently large number of such galaxies, allowing scientists to make some important and interesting discoveries.
