Researchers from the University of Arizona found traces of water in the soil samples of the asteroid Itokawa brought back by the Japanese probe Hayabusa in 2010.
Team Arizona has studied five of the particles from the asteroid with the help of a special device NanoSIMS ( mass spectrometer secondary ions). In two of these five particles, the team found a mineral called pyroxene, in the crystal structure which contains water.
This suggests that Itokawa is quite rich in water, although not in a liquid state. Researchers have estimated the water content in minerals Itokawa in the range of 698 to 988 ppm.
The discovery once again confirms the hypothesis that water once fell on the Earth due to asteroid collision.
