As in the Indian village keep clean. Photo

Garbage is a big problem: from plastic bottles and wrappers, ending with cow manure.

But this does not apply to the village of Mawlynnong. The people here are so sensitive to the order that spend huge amounts of time for cleaning, every inch of the village literally sparkled with cleanliness.

Mawlynnong first hit the headlines in 2003 when a journalist for Discover Magazine called it the cleanest village of Asia. Knowing that everything here, from small children to the elderly — are concerned about the contents of the village clean, the journalist decided to investigate this phenomenon and was literally amazed. His article attracted attention: people from all over the world went to Mawlynnong to see this example of a responsible attitude to the environment.

Sounds like a clever marketing ploy to attract tourists, but the reality is much more complicated. For residents Mawlynnong always the priority was cleanliness. No one really remembers when it started. Some believe that the reason was the outbreak of cholera over a century ago and that it has to keep order so that the disease does not spread. Others believe that the reason is matrilineal nature of the society. But one thing remains accurate, these values are transmitted from older to younger for many generations.

How can the village maintain cleanliness? The system is simple, but extremely effective. Involve all residents. Every morning all the children before school sweep the streets, empty the trash and sort the trash. The collected leaves take off in a big pit where they turn into compost. Plastic is recycled and the remaining waste is burned. In General, the village banned Smoking and the use of plastic, but sometimes he gets into the garbage because of the tourists. Tourists sometimes litter, but the locals don’t blame them, but just continue to keep clean.

In this village clean, not only public places. The inhabitants Mawlynnong so ingrained neatness that the exceptional order is maintained within each household.
