A group of British scientists have examined the remains in a cemetery in the abandoned village in the North of Yorkshire. Professionals learned how medieval villagers tried to prevent a zombie Apocalypse. The study was published in the journal of Archaeological Science.
The experts examined more than 100 bones that belonged to 10 people buried in the XI-XIII centuries. As a result, they found that all the corpses before burial were beheaded, dismembered and burned. If these people were victims of cannibalism on the bones would be left traces of knives. In the case of faced by archaeologists, these marks were only in the area of the neck.
Scientists believe that this behavior was due to fear of uprising people from the dead. The fact that in medieval folklore a lot of talk about the dead rising from the graves and kill the living. According to the beliefs of those years, to prevent this it was necessary to dismember and burn the body before burial.
This finding is the first evidence that people actually believed such stories. However, they do not exclude the possibility that the practice may be peculiar only to this particular settlement, but in other regions there were other rules burial.
