Africa is second largest continent after Eurasia, bordering the Mediterranean sea from the North, Red from the northeast, the Atlantic ocean to the West and Indian ocean to the East and South.
Africa is also known as part of the world, consisting of mainland Africa and adjacent Islands. The area of Africa is 29.2 million km2, with island of about 30.3 million km2, covering, thus, 6 % of the total area of the Earth’s surface and 20.4 % of the land surface. In Africa there are 55 countries — more than any other continent.
The population of Africa is about a billion people. Africa is considered the birthplace of humanity: it is here found the most ancient remains of early hominids and their possible ancestors.
