Along with the presentation of the new accelerator Radeon Instinct and “paper” announcement server chips EPYC second-generation AMD also shared their plans for the development of micro-Zen.
Currently, experts AMD busy with the release of prototypes of the new processors EPYC using the Zen architecture 2. Crystals for them manufactured by TSMC at the 7-nanometer process technology, the process of the first generation, and GlobalFoundries, a manufacturer of 14-nanometer “system controller”.
The next generation of server chips AMD EPYC, known under the code name Milan, will combine microarchitecture Zen 3 and improved to 7-nm process technology TSMC with the use of ultra-violet (EUV) lithography. The company’s representatives also confirmed the development of Zen 4, solutions based on which will be manufactured on advanced (probably 5-nanometer) standards.
As for the release dates, AMD Zen 3 will be shipped in 2020, and release products based on Zen 4 should be expected no earlier than 2021. What is important, at least successors announced yesterday EPYC server CPU will be compatible with the existing motherboards with socket Socket SP3.
