Scientists from the University of Case Western Reserve have discovered a group of proteins that will bliaut the molecular mechanism responsible for lifespan in worms and mammals. This is stated in the report published in the journal Nature Communications.
During the study experts found that the increase or decrease the concentration of KLF proteins regulating gene activity, allows you to extend or shorten the life round of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
It is noted that the KLF is present not only in worms but also in mammals, including humans. These compounds inhibit the expression of genes, in which the information in DNA is used for synthesis of biopolymers.
Also, this group of proteins control autophagy, contributing to the destruction of defective cells, their organelles and by-products of life. The result of the reduction of KLF, the accumulation of toxic substances in the cells that leads to aging.
In addition, these proteins are important for maintaining blood vessel function, and their loss causes the development of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
The study highlights that by increasing the concentration of KLF in humans can significantly increase lifespan.
