Retro photos made in Afghanistan in the mid-twentieth century
The mid-twentieth century was a landmark for Afghanistan.
It was then that the country, torn by internal conflicts and incursions from the outside, took a few faltering steps towards modernization. Then, de Afghanistan began to emerge from the influence of the Soviet Union, although it was in the cold war a neutral position, and surrender to the westernized lifestyle and liberal ideology. Next to mud houses grew modern buildings, and even the wearing of the veil became optional.
If you consider that the average life expectancy of Afghans born in 1960-m to year is 31, it becomes clear that the overwhelming number of the people depicted in these photos are no longer alive.
