The card will be available in the second half of 2018.
The Bank of Cyprus in cooperation with the companies Gemalto and Zwipe is working on the creation of a biometric payment card authentication, fingerprint, reports The Paypers.
A pilot project for its launch will be part of a wider plan of the Bank for digitalization of services.
Customers can apply to receive such a card in the branches of the Bank. To do this, developers created a special tablet that scans the fingerprint of a user and activates the payment card by using biometric information. The card is not equipped with a battery and will be powered by the payment terminal. The system is compatible with existing technologies and the processing of payments through a biometric payment cards will not require further investment from businesses.
Due authentication by fingerprint customers will no longer have to remember to update the PIN codes of payment cards. Moreover, unlike passwords and pins, fingerprints cannot be changed. The authentication system does not imply a perfect match of the fingerprint because the skin is easily susceptible to temperature changes and external influences that may temporarily distort the fingerprint.
