As one of the first countries to adopt Christianity, Ethiopia has preserved many churches and monasteries were built on mountain tops or carved into the rocks, and the vibrant tradition of worship. They are devoted to luxury book “Ethiopia: the life of the churches of the old Kingdom” (Ethiopia – The Living Churches of an Ancient Kingdom), released by the American University in Cairo. Holiday Timkat (Baptism)
Ethiopia adopted Christianity in the early fourth century. Today is a holiday Timkat is the most important of the nine major Christian holidays of Ethiopia. It is celebrated on January 19 to commemorate the baptism of Christ. For the celebration in the Northern town of Lalibela, the priests from different churches carry on their heads in place of blessings TABATA (or the tables of the law), wrapped in expensive fabric.
Epiphany water
The next morning, crowds of believers gather around a cross-shaped pool that represents the river Jordan, where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.
Church Of Bet Giorgis, Lalibela
The parishioners early in the morning go to the intricately carved and best preserved of the Church of Lalibela – bet Giorgis (St. George Church). This is the last time of the creation of the eleven ancient monolithic churches of the 13th century in Lalibela. Legend has it that it was dug after St. George appeared in front of the local Emperor and said, forgotten. The Church is carved in the shape of a Greek cross with sides of equal length. On a flat roof cut out of a triple Greek cross. Bet Giorgis – part of the UNESCO world heritage site.
The Church Of Debre-Damo
Debre-Damo is on a mountain with a flat top in the North of Ethiopia and is one of the most important centers of Christianity in the country. This small modern Church built in front of the grotto, where, as they say, disappeared Aregawi is one of the nine saints (or missionaries) who brought Christianity to Ethiopia. The saints were often attributed to the disappearance, not death. Protruding from the cloth and the skeletal remains of monks can be seen in niches in the walls of the cave.
Abuna Gebre Mikael
To get into the Church of abune Gebre Mikael in the mountains Geralt have to jump from one rock slab to another in a mountain ravine. In the interior there are two aisle and the Central nave with intriguing frescoes of late 18th and early 19th century. The color palette here is enriched with stunning blue, purple, orange and grey. They complement the traditional shades of brown and yellow.
The Church Of Johannes Maikudi
It also stands in the mountains Geralt. This is the last of the great Basil painted in the Tigray region. The Church carved out of white Sandstone on top of a mountain, towering 230 metres above the bottom of the valley. In the first part divided in two Church porch there is a small dome with engraved cross. The interior is decorated with colorful frescoes of biblical scenes, portraits of saints, and geometric patterns. They cover not only the walls but the ceiling.
Daniel Korkor
Daniel Korkor is above a dizzying 300-meter precipice. There is a stunning view. Say, two small chambers served as a refuge for the monk. Embellished only most of them. A niche in the wall opposite the entrance is the place where sat the hermit or monk. From this vantage point he could see the plains from which they came, and the heavens where he was going.
Abuna Of Yamata
Abuna of Yemata is one of the nine saints. He was elected as a hermit monastery vertex Guha in the range Geralt and retired from the hectic life. Later, he founded a Church carved into rock. To enter it, follow the steep and dangerous ascent. In this picture left shows the entrance to the Church.

The priest, peering through the only window of the Church of Abuna of Yamata. Local Ministers fun misleading visitors that attend Sunday services pregnant women, infants and the elderly, and nobody falls.
Petros and Paulos, Tech Tesfay
This Church, like many others in the ridge region of Geralt is in a picturesque location on a narrow ledge under the overhanging cliff. Previously, the only path lay through a 15-meter climbing the vertical cliff. Now there’s a rickety staircase. The Church is built of wood, stone and mortar, but a sanctuary carved into the rock. The walls are preserved beautiful frescoes of the late 17th century, in muted colours in the style of the 15th century.
The Arbat Entessa, Axum
Stone Church 1960-ies focusing on the four apocalyptic creatures, and tetramorph, especially revered in Ethiopia. Four animals become the symbols of the four evangelists: mark – lion, Luke – a sacrificial bullock, John – eagle, Matthew – the man. The walls and ceiling are covered with liturgical images painted in warm colors, but recoloured using a riot of primary colors.
It, Maryam, Lasta
The Church, carved in the reign of Emperor Yekuno Amlak (1270-85), preserves the earliest frescoes in Ethiopia, which presumably date from the late 13th century. Here you can see scenes from the old Testament and images of saints and scenes from the New Testament. This photograph shows the roof of the Church, decorated with carved crosses.
