A resident of the Netherlands trains new police officers in Ukraine

Dutchman Johan Liner trains Ukrainian police in Lviv to interact with society.

Living in the city for about a year.

“I’ve been forty years. Soon after this period, you were sent on a holiday. But times have changed, so now I have to work another six or seven years. The Dutch police has a lot of options: you can start as patrol, then become a dog handler, or to find yourself on horseback or even in Belopol. I started as a patrol and only after ten years, he led a group of patrol officers. There was a period when he worked as a security guard diplomats and even members of the Royal family. I’m now a senior police trainer, consult not a simple cops and their mentors”, says Johan Liner, said tvoemisto.

Before coming to Ukraine, I worked a lot abroad.

“Spent a year in the breakaway Republic of Kosovo, he also worked in Hungary, Belgium and in the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean sea. Was also in Suriname is perhaps the most beautiful country I have ever seen. Cooperation with police from other countries gave me a very special experience. In the Netherlands, Suriname, Belgium and Hungary I worked in the team that detained dangerous criminals. This is not a job for ordinary policemen. I had the opportunity first to take the officers to this team, and then train them.”

According to Johan, the situation in Ukraine has changed. Earlier, the police were an instrument of power, now serves the community.

“It existed not to serve the people, in order that the government could put pressure on him. It is clear that people did not have confidence in such a police. Now, after the Maidan, when the national police, the situation has changed: the main purpose of cops is to serve society, says Johan.

In the Netherlands more than twenty-five years working the concept of community policing that involves the cooperation of the police with society. This means that we do together all or almost all. If a problem occurs, it affects not only the police but all: of the municipality, owners of shops, restaurants and the like. Work on a solution together. But if you work together, learn about each other more – and this contributes to the trust. A quarter of a century we managed to build trust between the community and the police.”
