Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the intention to restore the death penalty.
His statement he made on Sunday, April 16, after the announcement of the results of the constitutional referendum.
The resurgence of the death penalty will be his “first priority,” Erdogan said in Istanbul during a speech to his supporters.
For approval of the death penalty requires the approval of at least two thirds of the deputies of the Turkish Parliament. If the deputies this idea would not get enough support, then there will be a referendum, Erdogan said. The referendum may be held if the proposal will vote 60% of members of Parliament.
About the possibility of a return to the death penalty, Erdogan spoke after a failed coup attempt that occurred in the summer of 2016. In Brussels noted that the restoration of capital punishment will put an end to the plans of Turkey to join the EU.
According to the national electoral Commission, the victory in this referendum was won by the proponents of expanding the powers of the President. According to preliminary results, Erdogan’s initiative was supported by 51.2% of voters, opposed by 48.8 percent. These data are based on the calculation of 99.96 percent of the ballots.
